Subtract your fixed monthly expenses and savings target from your monthly take-home income. The remaining amount is your discretionary budget. Divide by 30.4 to get a daily limit. For example: $4,000 income โ $2,200 fixed costs โ $400 savings = $1,400 รท 30.4 = $46 per day.
It works well for people who find category-based budgeting too detailed to maintain. A single daily number is easy to track mentally throughout the day. It is less precise than zero-based budgeting but far better than having no budget at all.
Rent or mortgage, utilities, phone, internet, insurance, subscriptions, minimum debt repayments, and any other committed monthly costs that do not vary. Do not include variable spending like groceries, dining, or entertainment โ those come out of your daily limit.
It signals that your fixed costs and savings targets consume most of your income. Review your fixed expenses first โ subscriptions, phone plans, and insurance are often reducible. If the number is genuinely very tight, the problem may be income rather than spending, which points to income growth as the lever to pull.
