Mr BudgetingMr B says: For restaurants, add a tip to the total before splitting. 15–20% is standard — just multiply the bill by 1.15 or 1.20 first.

Bill splitting questions

Add up the total, divide by the number of people, and each person pays that amount. If people ordered very different amounts, use the custom split mode above to enter each person's share. Add a tip to the total first if applicable.
Multiply the pre-tip total by 1.15 for a 15% tip or 1.20 for a 20% tip, then enter the tip-inclusive total in this calculator before splitting. For example, a $120 bill with a 20% tip becomes $144, which splits to $36 per person between four people.
Use the custom amounts mode and enter what each person actually ordered. Some groups prefer even splits to keep things simple — choose whichever approach avoids awkwardness for your group. For regular shared expenses like rent and utilities, even splits are generally easier to manage.
For recurring household bills, divide each bill by the number of people sharing and set up a direct debit or standing order. Apps like Splitwise or just a shared notes doc work well for tracking who owes what across multiple bills over time.
